As everyone who knows me will attest, I am a bit obsessed with birds. They have dominated my academic and professional career for the last 10 years.
One of the reasons I am so struck by birds is their diversity. There are nearly 900 species to be found in South Africa! South Africa as a country is synonymous with diversity. We have 12 official languages, and are represented by a kaleidoscope of cultures, customs, and cuisine. Our national motto translates literally as “diverse people unite” - ! ke e: /xarra //ke.
However, I am disheartened by how our diversity is so often a wedge used to drive people apart, rather than something that we actively celebrate. For children growing up in the new South Africa, there is a need for them to be taught to appreciate and marvel at others who are different from them, and for those differences to spur on curiosity so that they are inspired to learn about each other rather than disassociate.
I had the idea to use birds and their diversity as a tool to teach about other facets of diversity, especially culture and language.
So, the book I have published has three objectives:
I hope you and your loved ones enjoy it!
